2021 Atomique³ “Le Basalt” Chardonnay

Eola-Amity Hills, Willamette Valley, Oregon
100% Chardonnay

Tasting Notes

The 2021 Le Basalt is a mineral-driven, Burgundy-inspired Oregon Chardonnay with remarkable tension and depth. Aromas of lemon zest, green apple, white peach, dried apricot, white flowers, ginger, and subtle vanilla lead into a palate marked by saline minerality, flint, citrus, and rich creaminess.

The wine is concentrated without feeling heavy, with bright acidity and a long, savory finish. Its volcanic origins show through in its stony, flinty character and impressive structure. One retailer describes it as the more intensely flavored of Atomique³'s two 2021 Chardonnays, while the Le Sédimentaire bottling is the cooler, more stony counterpart.

Interestingly, recent tasters have compared its mineral-driven character to Chablis, while noting the wine's richer texture and Oregon fruit profile.

Interesting Facts

  • Jean-Marc Roulot Connection: This is one of the most compelling reasons to pay attention to this wine. Atomique³ was created with the involvement of Jean-Marc Roulot, the legendary Meursault producer, alongside winemaker Felipe Ramirez and renowned Chilean soil scientist Pedro Parra. Roulot's influence gives the project a very Burgundian focus on terroir and precision.
  • Only About 200 Cases: This is tiny production. Approximately 200 cases were made of the 2021 Le Basalt, making it a genuinely limited wine rather than simply a boutique label.
  • The Name Tells You the Terroir: Le Basalt comes from a vineyard in the Eola-Amity Hills with only about 35 cm (14 inches) of silty red clay before reaching fractured ancient basalt. The vines have to push deep into the volcanic rock for water and nutrients.
  • A Terroir Experiment: Atomique³ makes different Chardonnays according to soil type, rather than simply vineyard location. Le Basalt represents volcanic basalt soils, while its companion Le Sédimentaire comes from sedimentary/marine soils. The project is essentially asking: What does the soil do to Chardonnay?
  • The First Vintage: 2021 was the inaugural vintage of Atomique³. That makes this particular bottle especially interesting to collectors who enjoy discovering the early vintages of potentially important producers.
  • Burgundy Meets Oregon: The project combines Oregon Chardonnay fruit with Burgundy-inspired winemaking and extremely detailed geological work. It is a great example of the growing reputation of Oregon Chardonnay as a serious fine-wine category.
  • Food Pairings

    This would be fantastic with:

    • 🦪 Oysters
    • 🦀 Dungeness crab
    • 🐟 Grilled halibut
    • 🐟 Branzino or sea bass
    • 🦐 Grilled prawns
    • 🍗 Chicken paillard with lemon
    • 🍄 Wild mushroom dishes
    • 🧀 Comté or Gruyère
    • 🦞 Lobster with brown butter

The combination of acidity, richness and minerality makes it particularly good with shellfish and richer seafood.

    Why We Love It

This is one of those wines I'd put in the "If you like Burgundy, you need to try this" category.

The really compelling story is that Jean-Marc Roulot — one of Meursault's great names — helped bring a Burgundy mindset to a tiny Oregon Chardonnay project, while Pedro Parra focused intensely on the geology. The result is not an attempt to make Chardonnay taste like Burgundy so much as an attempt to make Oregon Chardonnay express its own terroir with Burgundian precision.

And because only around 200 cases were produced, this is a wine I'd position as a discovery bottle for serious Chardonnay drinkers, rather than an everyday Oregon Chardonnay.
