  • Region: Polkadraai Hills, Stellenbosch, South Africa
  • Soil: Decomposed dolomite and granite, which is where the name comes from. It gives the wine fresh acidity and a long, mineral finish.
  • Winemaking: Picked by hand in February, then hand-sorted three times. The grapes soaked cold on their skins for five days, fermented at 28°C, were basket-pressed, and went through malolactic fermentation in steel tanks. The wine then aged 14 months in 300L French oak barrels, none of them new.
  • Alcohol: 13.5%. Screw cap. Vegan.
  • Tasting notes: Dark and red cherry on the nose. The palate shows raspberry, redcurrant and dark berries, with tobacco leaf, pencil shavings, herbs, wet stone and a soft, velvety finish. It’s medium-bodied and should appeal to fans of Loire Valley Cabernet Franc.
  • Drinking window: Good now. Retailers suggest drinking it by 2027, or cellaring it for 2–5 more years.
  • Food pairings: Beef fillet, pork loin, game birds in red wine sauce, charcuterie

Interesting facts

  • Bruwer Raats founded the winery in 2000. He was one of the first in South Africa to bottle Cabernet Franc on its own rather than in a blend.
  • The estate makes only two grapes, Chenin Blanc and Cabernet Franc, under the motto “excellence through specialisation.”
  • Bruwer became cellar master at Delaire at 26, reportedly the youngest in South Africa at the time.
  • In 2018 the estate earned five of a possible seven five-star ratings in Platter’s Wine Guide, a record for a single producer.
  • Raats was one of the 15 founding members of PIWOSA (Premium Independent Wineries of South Africa).
Shipping Policy

Title to, and Ownership of Alcoholic Beverages

Title to, and ownership of, all alcoholic beverages passes from a Licensee to the purchaser at the licensed retail premises or warehouse and state it is purchased in and the purchaser takes all responsibility for shipping it from the licensed retail premises or warehouse to his/her home state. By arranging for transportation of the alcoholic beverages, the retailer is providing a service to and acting on behalf of the purchaser. By utilizing this service, the purchaser is representing that he/she is acting in a fashion compliant with his/her local and state laws regarding the purchase, transportation, and delivery of alcoholic beverages. The purchaser represents that he/she has obtained any required permission, paid any required fees, is working through properly licensed intermediaries where required, is legally entitled to take possession of alcoholic beverages, and is legally entitled to take quantities ordered and once again authorizes that he/she is 21 years of age.

International Shipping

Generally, we do not ship internationally, as some countries have restrictions on wine/sake shipping. Please send an email to elizabeth@inthecru.com before purchasing. In all cases, local taxes and shipping will be paid by the purchaser.

Signature Policy

For successful delivery of your wine or sake on the initial try, we highly advise selecting an address where an individual aged at least 21 is present to sign for the package. Legally, wine cannot be left without such a signature. Unfortunately, we are unable to refund shipping fees for packages returned due to the absence of an adult for signing. Shipments cannot be sent to APOs, FPOs, or P.O. boxes. Additionally, deliveries will not be made to individuals deemed intoxicated by the driver.
